From FMLA Paperwork to Sick Leave Panic: My Current Battle

I haven’t decided yet if the USPS Informed Delivery service is a blessing or a curse. I received my daily email showing what mail I was expecting to be delivered and immediately noticed a letter from my husband’s employer regarding his FMLA status. He hasn’t worked in three weeks due to his initial carpal tunnel surgery, the first infection, and then the dangerous infection that required an emergency second surgery with hospitalization.

His employer can sometimes seem ruthless when it comes to their employees missing work. Thus the need for FMLA protection so he is not reprimanded for this time off. It makes me wonder what lead to this. Why is it not enough to take someone’s word for it when they tell you they can’t come to work due to an injury or illness? As a large employer, I’m sure their reasoning is because people misuse their leave policy. But I wonder what ever happened to the integrity of someone’s word.

I pride myself on being a woman of my word. When I say I will do something, then that’s a personal guarantee that I will follow through. This has also taught me how and when to say “no” to things that I can’t give 100% to. I believe that if something is worth doing, then it’s worth doing well.

Sorry for that rabbit trail. I just put down the FMLA packet again. They returned it due to missing pages, but it doesn’t say exactly what pages were missing when it was submitted. I do not have the original packet because Lee handed that over to the nurse prior to his first surgery and she reaffirmingly said they have a department that will take care of it.

Have you been in a situation where you assumed someone would complete something accurately and timely because they gave you their word but then they didn’t follow through? How did that impact your life? What would you do differently next time? I can’t imagine that I’m alone in my current battle.
